Back Market is the world’s leading refurbished electronics marketplace with a team of 650 people, powering operations in 18 countries (and counting!).
Named one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company in 2019 and again in 2021, our mission is simple: empowering people to consume tech sustainably by offering folks a high quality, accessible, and more eco-friendly alternative to buying new electronics. Why? Refurbished tech helps lower our collective environmental impact. We have indeed contributed to avoid the production of more than 1,000,000 tons of CO2e worldwide since our launch in 2014.
Be part of an exciting and growing international adventure that will change the way the world consumes tech.
About the team:
The Design team, part of the Product org at Back Market, is a distributed team offices in New York, Europe and Tokyo as well as fully remote, ensuring a richly diverse mindset in our approach and deliverables and a passion to build interfaces with the user as our focus.
We zoom out to see the bigger picture, but also understand the devil is in the details. We are responsible for the user experience on Back Market, whether that be our customers or professional refurbishers, and through designing, prototyping, testing, and iterating, we evolve it in collaboration with different (and extraordinary) people.
We do this because we want to make the world a better place. Our credentials speak for themselves; we’re certified BCorp, and we’ve prevented 1 million tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere already. A lot of people talk about tech circularity – we’re making it real. <3
About the job:
We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to join us in our newly formed and nimble Services Team that gives customers more reasons to choose Back Market for a worry-free tech life, and brings additional revenue streams to our business than just “selling tech”.
This position is perfect if you love design details, can translate it to business impact, can demonstrate responsible autonomy, and are looking for an opportunity to challenge your continued growth.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Designing how customers discover and live with our services
  • Contributing to the discovery, roadmapping, advocating for the right approach, and delivering a best in class customer experience
  • Collaborating with User Researchers to bring clarity to ambiguous problems with relevant customer insights, and consulting quantitative and qualitative data to inform your design decisions
  • Partnering with Product Managers and Engineers to define and build high-performing solutions
  • Advocating for and expertly leveraging appropriate design methods and tools to help your team deliver solutions that actually work for our customers and our partners

You’re perfect for this role if:

  • You think about interfaces not as static pixels but as dynamic experiences and can express yourself with motion, flows, and stories.
  • You demonstrate knowledge in design methods and craft. You have examples where you contributed a successful impact.
  • You have your ear to the ground regarding new tools and technologies that help our work become more effective and efficient. Oh, and we use Figma by the way.
  • You can contribute inclusive design practices and you are comfortable in voicing your opinion.
  • You have an attention to detail regarding edge cases, hierarchy, and accessibility.
  • You are inherently curious, you proactively explore different solutions, you are idealistic but you challenge the status quo responsibility and can always find the middle ground.
  • You are interested in products that drive revenue and save the planet (yes we found the magic mix).
  • You are comfortable designing a global product with local specificities.
  • You are comfortable in communicating professionally in English as we are an international team.

Ice on top of the cake:

  • Experience working with app engineers, knowledge of Apple and Android design specificities/guidelines
  • Experience working with and contributing to a design system
  • Experience mentoring and growing junior or mid-level designers – but no line management experience required
This position has an estimated annual base salary range of $120,000 to $145,000, plus opportunities for equity. Actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to demonstrated skill set, years and depth of relevant experience, and some role-dependent factors. We welcome direct conversations with each candidate about compensation in all of our initial calls.

We’re here to SABOTAGE!

SABOTAGE! is our mantra. It keeps us focused on what we aspire to be: a little bit sneaky, always smart, kinda frugal and constantly conspiring to create maximum impact.

SABOTAGE! will save us all.

Sticking to this mindset is what will save us from boredom, save us from the pitfalls of hypergrowth, and save us from becoming a “corporation” in the evil sense of the word.

SABOTAGE! is our constant call to action.

It’s a reminder not to rest on our laurels or credit cards. It points us to where we want to go but also tells us to stay true to who we are.

It’s all about neat problems

Our SABOTAGE! spirit is about ingenuity and the love of a challenge. So, you’ll find us inventing new word plays for one of our ads or live streaming the Rubik’s Cube World Cup on a lunch break.

We move faster than the rest with rewards and a feedback culture

During an impromptu football match or a yearly growth report meeting, we’re inspired by giveaways, shares, and a culture of collaboration.

United we stand. Divided we fail to get to net zero.

We’re global citizens. At our All-hands annual party you could hear French, German, or Japanese, but in the office we only speak one language—the language of climate action.
